Most advice about photos and forms is about making files smaller. But some forms also set a minimum size. If your photo is below it, the upload fails with a message such as “file size too small”. Here is how to fix that.
Why a form says the file is too small
- The form asks for a size in a range, for example between 50 KB and 100 KB.
- The photo was compressed a lot, for example after it was sent on a messaging app.
- The picture is small, or has very little detail, so it makes a small file.
Sizes differ from form to form, so first read the instructions on your own form and note the minimum, the maximum, and the size in pixels.
Step by step
- Open the Increase image size in KB tool.
- Choose your photo or signature.
- Enter the minimum size from your form. If the form also gives a maximum, enter that too.
- If the form states a width and a height in pixels, enter those as well.
- Press Resize image and look at the size shown.
- Download the file and upload it to the form.
Your photo is handled on your own device and is not uploaded to our servers.
What the tool really does
It saves the picture as a JPG at high quality. If the file is still below the minimum, it adds invisible data until it reaches the size. The picture looks exactly the same and does not become sharper. Many portals only check the size in KB, so this is what they need. If you need a better-looking picture, retake the photo in daylight instead.
If your form gives both a minimum and a maximum
Enter both. For example, with 50 KB as the minimum and 100 KB as the maximum, the tool keeps the file between the two. Use the photo and signature resizer if you also need exact pixel sizes or a crop.
Other ways to get a larger file
- Start from the original photo, not a copy sent over a messaging app. Those copies are already compressed.
- Use a larger width and height if the form allows it. A bigger picture makes a bigger file.
- Take the photo in good light. Photos with more real detail make larger files.
Check before you upload
- The size in KB is inside the range your form gives.
- The width and height match the form, if it states them.
- The file type is JPG, unless the form asks for something else.
- The face or signature is clear and not cut off.
