Many application forms ask you to upload a picture of your signature, often with a small size limit. A clean, simple image gets accepted the first time. Here is how to make one with just a pen, paper and your phone.
What you need
- A sheet of plain white paper
- A dark pen, black or dark blue
- Your phone and good light
Step 1: Sign on white paper
Sign inside a clear space, using the same signature you use on your other documents. Make it fairly large so the strokes stay clear when the picture is made smaller.
Step 2: Take the photo
- Place the paper on a flat surface near a window.
- Hold the phone directly above it, so the paper is not at an angle.
- Avoid shadows from your hand or phone falling on the signature.
Step 3: Crop close
Use your gallery’s crop tool to cut away the extra paper. Leave a small white border around the signature. A tight crop makes the signature fill the frame, which looks better in the small space the form gives it.
Step 4: Resize to the form’s limits
- Open the photo and signature resizer.
- Add your cropped picture.
- Enter the maximum size in KB from your form, and the width and height in pixels if it states them.
- Choose Fit inside if you want the whole signature kept with white borders. Choose Fill the frame only if you are happy to lose the edges.
- Press Resize image, check the preview, and download the JPG.
Check before you upload
- You can read the signature clearly in the preview.
- The background is white and even, with no shadow.
- Size in KB and pixels match what the form says.
- The file is a JPG, unless the form asks for something else.
A note on typed signatures
Some forms only accept a handwritten signature. Do not use a typed or font signature unless the form says it is allowed. Check the instructions on your own form.
